Most health apps are built for someone else's convenience — your insurer's, your hospital's, or an advertiser's. Your data lives on servers in the US. The "personalized" advice is the same for everyone. When you switch platforms, you lose everything.
HealthOS flips this. You own your data. It lives on your device first (using a technology called Dexie — basically a local database in your browser), with an optional backup to EU-based servers in Frankfurt, Germany. Nothing leaves Europe.
Most health platforms give you one version of the truth. We give you four:
- ⚕️ Conventional medicine — 33,918 articles based on AWMF guidelines (the German equivalent of NICE in the UK or CDC in the US), WHO recommendations, and ICD codes (ICD = International Classification of Diseases — the standard system doctors use to classify every known condition)
- 🌿 Plant-based medicine (Phytotherapy) — 2,252 articles, sourced from BfArM (Germany's federal medicines authority) and EMA HMPC (the European Medicines Agency's herbal committee)
- ☯️ Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — 325 articles, cross-referenced with Cochrane Reviews (the gold standard of independent medical research summaries)
- 🧪 Experience medicine — 200 articles covering off-label use (treatments used beyond their official approval), N=1 reports (single-person self-experiments), and traditional folk remedies
- 🔬 Trend medicine — 387 articles that fact-check health claims from YouTube and social media influencers
We also index 5,157 active ingredients with their mechanisms and known interactions, and the full ICD-10/11 catalogue of 16,793 diagnosis codes — each explained in plain language, not medical shorthand.
Why four traditions? Because patients don't live in one. A person with chronic back pain might be seeing a rheumatologist, trying acupuncture, and reading about magnesium supplements — all in the same week. We show all perspectives, label how strong the evidence is, and tell you honestly where medical experts disagree.
HealthOS lets you track your health across 11 condition-specific modules:
- Mental health — validated mood and wellbeing questionnaires
- Diabetes & metabolism — glucose patterns, HbA1c context (HbA1c = a blood test that shows your average blood sugar over the past 3 months)
- Heart & circulation — blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol (lipids)
- Respiratory — asthma, COPD (a chronic lung condition that makes breathing difficult), allergies
- Musculoskeletal — pain levels, mobility, rehabilitation progress
- Digestion — IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), reflux, microbiome tracking
- Lab values — blood markers, hormones, microbiome results — each with plain-language explanations
- Symptom check — a structured conversation (not a diagnosis) that gives you a clear symptom summary to take to your doctor
- Daily check-in — mood, sleep, symptoms
- Correlations — the AI finds patterns across your data (e.g., poor sleep consistently precedes higher blood pressure readings)
- Voice — hands-free logging via voice
Every tracked value connects back to the knowledge library. When your blood pressure spikes, you see the relevant guidelines — not generic lifestyle advice.
Helo is not a chatbot with a medical disclaimer bolted on. It is a structured health coach with one hard rule: no diagnosis, ever.
What it does instead: when you say "I've had a headache for three days," Helo asks structured questions about location, severity, triggers, and related symptoms. The result is a clear, organized symptom summary you can bring to your actual doctor — so you spend your 10-minute appointment talking about the right things.
Because Helo has access to your tracking data (with your permission), it can notice things a time-pressed doctor can't: that your headaches correlate with poor sleep the night before, or that they started when you changed your medication.
This was a deliberate choice, not a technical constraint.
GDSVO (Germany's implementation of the EU's GDPR — the General Data Protection Regulation) is the strictest data protection framework in the world. Healthcare data is the most sensitive data that exists. Building on US cloud infrastructure and then claiming GDPR compliance is, in our view, a legal grey area that we refused to enter.
Everything runs on Hetzner servers in Frankfurt. No AWS. No Google Cloud. No Azure. The business model will be sustainable services — B2B2C partnerships with health insurers and employers — not selling anonymized data.
Multi-perspective medicine is more controversial than we expected. Presenting TCM and plant medicine alongside evidence-based medicine — with honest evidence ratings — drew criticism from both camps. The "only clinical trials count" side and the "all traditions are equally valid" side both pushed back. We held our position.
The AI coach needs 30+ days of data to become genuinely useful. Getting users to that milestone required rethinking the entire first-week experience.
GDPR compliance is a commercial advantage in DACH. Every corporate wellness buyer and health insurer in Germany asks "where is the data?" Frankfurt is the right answer. US hosting is disqualifying.
